What Is TRICARE?

TRICARE is the worldwide health care program for uniformed service members and their eligible family members, managed by the Defense Health Agency (DHA).

Your eligibility and location determine which plans are available to you. Most TRICARE health plans feature comprehensive health care coverage and a pharmacy benefit.

To see which plans you qualify for, use the official TRICARE Plan Finder. Your uniformed service records eligibility in the DEERS system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility depends on your beneficiary category (active duty, retired, Reserve/Guard, family member), your sponsor's status, and your location. Use the official TRICARE Plan Finder at tricare.mil/planfinder. Your eligibility is recorded in DEERS by your uniformed service.
TRICARE For Life acts as a "wraparound" to Medicare. Medicare pays first, then automatically forwards your claim to TFL's processor (WPS Government Services), which covers remaining TRICARE-covered costs. TFL begins automatically once you have both Medicare Part A and Part B — no enrollment required.
Yes. Military retirees who become eligible for Medicare (typically at age 65) automatically qualify for TRICARE For Life as long as they maintain Medicare Part A and Part B. This combination provides very comprehensive coverage with minimal out-of-pocket costs for covered services.
Enrollment rules differ by plan and depend on your eligibility. Premium-based plans (Reserve Select, Retired Reserve, Young Adult) can generally be purchased at any time you're eligible. Standard plans have specific enrollment periods. Learn more at tricare.mil/enroll.
Generally, all TRICARE plans cover the same services including preventive care, mental health, maternity, and pharmacy services. Copayments and cost-shares may apply depending on your specific plan and beneficiary status. Visit tricare.mil/coveredservices for the full list.
Yes. Most TRICARE plans have overseas options. TRICARE Prime Overseas and TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas are available for ADSMs and command-sponsored family members. TRICARE Select Overseas covers eligible family members not enrolled in Prime Overseas. For care outside the U.S., expect to pay upfront and file claims with International SOS Government Services.
