    Common Questions

    North Carolina Medicare FAQ

The questions North Carolina seniors ask most β€” answered plainly.

More than 200 Medicare Advantage plans are offered across North Carolina, but what matters is what's available in your county. Mecklenburg (Charlotte) and Wake (Raleigh) typically have the most choices, while smaller rural counties have fewer. Enter your ZIP code in our comparison tool to see exactly what's offered where you live.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is the state's largest health insurer and offers Medicare Advantage plans in most counties, often with broad in-state networks. But Aetna, Humana, UnitedHealthcare and Devoted Health also offer competitive plans. The right choice depends on your doctors, your prescriptions and your budget β€” so compare them side by side.
The standard Part B premium is set by the federal government and is the same in every state. It's usually updated each fall for the following year β€” check Medicare.gov for the current amount. People with higher incomes pay an extra amount on top of the standard premium, called IRMAA, based on income brackets that are also updated each year.
Yes. North Carolina's Medicare Savings Programs can help eligible residents pay Part A and B premiums and, for some programs, deductibles and coinsurance. If you qualify, you also automatically qualify for Extra Help, which lowers Part D drug costs. Contact your county DSS office or call SHIIP at 1-855-408-1212 to apply.
Some Medicare Advantage plans in North Carolina include an over-the-counter (OTC) allowance you can use for approved health items at participating stores or by mail. Amounts, eligible items and rules vary widely by plan and county, and not every plan offers one. Our comparison tool shows each plan's extra benefits so you can see what's included.
